The faïence manufactory was established in 1743 at the behest of Francis I, the husband of Empress Maria Theresa. Besides the business aspects, Francis was fond of the high-quality ceramics produced in Castelli, Tuscany, which he became Grand Duchy of in 1737. The manufactory was equipped with the latest technology (furnaces from Lorraine) and privileges and employed specialists from abroad, who brought their techniques and knowledge of dish forms and patterns with them. From the very outset they produced dishes in the forms of birds, fruits, and vegetables designed for the castle dining table.
